How to use the kit

1

Cover-uncover test

Using the eye occluder, cover one eye for 1-2 seconds, look carefully for outward, inwards, upwards or downwards movement of the uncovered eye. Quickly remove the occluder and see if the position of the covered eye changes - if one eye shifts while the other is covered, this can suggest the child has misalignment.

2

Fixation test

To test for other causes of Amblyopia- how well each eye follows a moving object. While occluding one eye, using the glasses, ask the child to focus on a picture and move this in different directions. Note if the uncovered eye can follow the picture with ease. Clear differences in their ability to do this may suggest Amblyopia.

3

Picture and number chart test

At 10 feet away, ask your child to read the letters and name the pictures. Note the number of the line they get to. If they cannot read below:

line 5 in 3 year old

line 6 in 4-5 year old

line 7 in >5 years

and/or there is more than a 2 line difference between the two eyes, this indicates Amblyopia is present.
